The step before styling subtitles
ASS is the format that can carry fonts, colours, outlines, positioning and karaoke timing — everything SRT deliberately leaves out. Converting an SRT into ASS is how a plain file becomes editable in Aegisub or a typesetting workflow: the lines arrive with the default style, ready to be restyled rather than retyped. Nothing is invented in the process; the file gains the fields ASS needs and keeps every word and timing it already had.

What changes, and what doesn't
A subtitle file is a list of lines with a start and an end. Converting one rewrites how those three things are spelled — the words, the cue order and the timings themselves come through untouched, as long as the target format can hold them. Where it cannot, the rounding is the format's own: ASS and SSA keep hundredths of a second, MicroDVD counts frames, MPL2 tenths, TMP whole seconds, and plain text drops the timings entirely because it has nowhere to put them. Converting to SRT or VTT never loses anything, which is why those two are the safe formats to keep an archive in.
