Any container, the same subtitle file
MOV is what an iPhone records and what Final Cut exports; MKV is what a downloaded film arrives in, often with several audio tracks; WebM comes out of screen recorders and browsers; AVI is what older camcorders and archives left behind. None of that changes the work: subtitles are made from the sound, so the audio track is pulled out of the container locally and only that is sent for recognition. A 1 GB recording becomes a few dozen megabytes of audio before anything touches the network, which is both faster than uploading the video and the reason the video never has to be uploaded at all.
About the VTT format
WebVTT (.vtt) is the web-native caption format — the only one the HTML5 <track> element understands. Use it for video players on websites, HLS/DASH streams and YouTube uploads; it also supports styling and cue positioning.
